Panic in APC as Atiku resigns

PALPABLE panic yesterday enveloped the national secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, over the resignation of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, from the party. Atiku had dumped the APC on the grounds that he and others that defected to the party from PDP were deceived into defecting to the party. All through yesterday, especially in the hours following the announcement, mum was the word among top APC leaders Nigerian Pilot on Saturday contacted. The only leader that volunteered his view on phone from the South West, said, “It was expected. And many more will follow. “That is how it goes when there is no internal cohesion, discipline and openness within the party. Politically speaking, we must arrest the situation before APC become a passenger in its own ship of date. I know what I am talking about because when I heard the announcement this morning, I spoke with about eight leaders of our Party in three zones. And they feel the same way.” Jolted by Atiku’s resignation, national leaders of the APC yesterday had a marathon closed door meeting with the Secretary to the government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha and Kano state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje at the party’s national secretariat, Abuja. A statement personally signed by Atiku and released via his media office traced the former vice president’s journey through the APC and concluded that his decision to quit the ruling party was to allow him time ponder his “future.” In his letter of resignation sent to the national leadership of the party, Atiku said APC has gone beyong “arbitrariness and unconstitutionality” to “institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.” While describing APC as a “dying party” that has “failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people.”, he disclosed that his decision to join APC came due to the fractionalization in the Peoples Democratic Party as a result of the special convention of August 31, 2013. He also noted that the members of the APC appealed to him to join their party with the promise that “the injustices and failure to abide by its own constitution which had dogged the then PDP, would not be replicated in the APC and with the assurance that the vision other founding fathers and I had for the PDP could be actualized through the All Progressives Congress. “On that day, I said ‘it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision’ to accept the invitation to join the All Progressives Congress. “However, events of the intervening years have shown that like any other human and like many other Nigerians, I was fallible. “While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalization, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.” He said A close aide of Atiku who craved for anonymity told the Nigerian Pilot in telephone chat that the former Vice President will formally return to the PDP in the first week of December. He added that Atiku will return to the party before the December 10 national convention to enable him participates fully in the convention. Reacting to the resignation of Atiku, the PDP said through its National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye that the party is ready to welcome back Atiku and others that defected to the APC. According to Prince Adeyeye, there is no precondition for Atiku, who is one of the founding fathers of PDP, to return to the party and stressed that they were deceived into defecting to the APC. His words: “The former Vice President, Atiku who was one of the founding fathers, contested and won elections as governor of Ad
